In Instantly, add a visible unsubscribe link from each email step's Sequence editor, then test it with a controlled lead in a real campaign send. The link in an editor preview email is not a working test: Instantly says it functions only for leads in the campaign. After the controlled lead opts out, confirm its status is Unsubscribed and check how your workspace prevents future contact.
This guide follows Instantly's unsubscribe-link instructions, List-Unsubscribe header instructions, and Global Blocklist documentation, checked October 1, 2026. These are documented controls; we have not sent a private-account test email for this article.
Three separate controls: a body link gives the recipient a visible opt-out in the message; a List-Unsubscribe header gives supporting mail clients a header-level action; a workspace blocklist prevents addresses or domains from being imported or contacted across campaigns. Verify each control you rely on. One checkbox is not proof that the other two are configured.
Choose the outcome before editing the sequence
An opt-out workflow should answer three questions: Can the recipient find the link? Does clicking it record the lead as Unsubscribed? Will another campaign or future import avoid that address? The first two are testable in one controlled campaign. The third needs an explicit workspace suppression rule.
| Control | Where Instantly documents it | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Visible link in message body | Campaign → Sequence → selected email step → + → Insert unsubscribe link | A real campaign message contains the intended link text and the test lead becomes Unsubscribed after confirmation. |
| Header-level unsubscribe | Campaign → Options → Advanced options → Insert unsubscribe link header | The delivered message's original headers contain the relevant List-Unsubscribe fields. The client's visible UI may vary. |
| Workspace blocklist | Settings → Blocklist → Blocklist tab | An opted-out address is blocked for active campaigns and later imports, under your chosen process. |
This is a product workflow, not a substitute for checking the rules that apply to your audience and message type. In particular, Google's sender guidelines distinguish a visible body link from one-click header requirements for covered bulk marketing or subscribed messages.
Step 1: Insert the visible link in the campaign email
Open the campaign's Sequence section and select the email step you want to edit. Place the cursor where the recipient should see the opt-out text, click the + in the editor toolbar and select Insert unsubscribe link. Keep Instantly's default “Click here to unsubscribe” wording or replace it with clear text appropriate to the message. Save the step.
That procedure is from Instantly's current help article. The article shows insertion within a selected email step; it does not say that editing one step inserts a link into every later step. Inspect each step in your sequence where you expect a visible link and save each relevant edit. Do not replace the built-in link with an ordinary URL whose opt-out behavior you have not configured and tested.
Keep the text easy to find and unambiguous. A link labeled as something else may technically exist but fail the recipient's basic task of leaving the sequence. The visible link is also separate from the sending account's connection, tracking settings and lead status.
Step 2: Decide whether to enable the header option
Instantly documents a separate List-Unsubscribe setting at Campaign Options → Advanced options → Insert unsubscribe link header. Check that option and save when your message policy calls for a header-level opt-out. Instantly says the header makes a one-click unsubscribe option available to supporting providers, but it also warns that a mail client may not display the button for a message it treats as a normal conversation.
To inspect what was actually sent, open a delivered controlled message in a mail client that offers Show original and inspect its headers. Instantly specifically tells users to look for the List-Unsubscribe tag. Google's current sender guidelines describe two headers for its covered one-click requirement: List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post. Instantly's short help article names the former but does not explicitly document the latter. If your sending category is subject to Google's one-click rule, check both headers in the actual message and seek provider confirmation if one is missing; do not infer compliance from the setting's label or from a mail client's button.
The header option does not replace a visible body link for messages that require one. Conversely, a body link does not prove the required header behavior. Keep both requirements in the same release check rather than letting different owners assume the other setting was handled.
Step 3: Test with a real campaign lead, not Preview
Instantly says the unsubscribe link does not work in test emails sent from Preview mode. A dead link in that preview is therefore not enough evidence of a broken live link. Use a controlled email address that your team owns and is allowed to use for this test:
- Add that address as a real lead to the test campaign.
- Launch the campaign so it sends an actual campaign email to that lead. Confirm the correct message step was sent.
- Open the received message, click the body unsubscribe link and complete any confirmation screen.
- Return to the campaign's lead view and verify the status changed to Unsubscribed.
- If the header is enabled, use Show original to inspect the delivered message headers separately.
This is Instantly's documented testing path with the header check added. Use an isolated campaign or controlled segment so you do not accidentally email a production prospect while testing. Record the step tested, message timestamp and resulting lead status; do not assume a Preview result represents a real send.
Step 4: Check suppression beyond that campaign
The test above proves a status change for one lead. It does not, by itself, demonstrate your desired rule for every existing campaign, new import or separate tool. Instantly's Global Blocklist is the documented workspace-wide control for addresses or domains: entries in its Blocklist tab are checked during imports and ongoing campaigns. Instantly also offers an Unsubscribed leads automatic blocklist trigger in its Blocklist settings; inspect whether it is available and enabled in your plan and workspace.
There is an important difference between its two blocklist sources. Instantly says the Blocklist tab also stops leads already present in active campaigns, whereas a Google Sheets blocklist is checked only when importing or uploading leads. If your operational requirement is “never email this opted-out address from another active campaign,” relying on an import-only sheet is insufficient. Review the opt-out address in the workspace Blocklist tab or maintain a clearly owned process that gets it there. Avoid placing an entire company domain on the blocklist because one individual opted out unless that is your explicit policy.
An opt-out can also arrive as a plain-text reply instead of a click. Instantly's stop-sending guide says changing a lead away from the default Lead status stops the sequence, and it explains how to add a lead to the Blocklist tab. Give a human owner the job of processing those replies. Do not wait for a link click when the recipient's message already makes the request clear.
Jan described this operating distinction in a May 2023 Pipedrive walkthrough: a positive reply became a sales opportunity, while an unsubscribe went onto a suppression list so the team would not reach out again. That is historical evidence of his process, not a claim that this is how Instantly automatically handles every opt-out today.
If HubSpot or another CRM also holds the contact, route the suppression signal there under your team's data policy. Instantly exposes a separate Lead Unsubscribed Zapier trigger, but a Zap that creates an Interested contact is not an opt-out sync. Our Interested-reply-to-HubSpot guide keeps those event paths separate.
Troubleshoot the actual failure
| Symptom | What it usually means to check | Safe next step |
|---|---|---|
| Preview email's unsubscribe link does not work | Instantly says Preview links are nonfunctional. | Test an actual campaign message to a controlled lead. |
| No visible link in one follow-up | The link was inserted in a different selected step, or the step was not saved. | Open that step in Sequence, insert and save its own visible link, then inspect a real send. |
| Mail client shows no header unsubscribe button | Some clients do not display it for conversation-like messages; the header may still be present. | Inspect Show original for the relevant headers and compare with your requirements. |
| Lead clicked, but a later campaign still contacts them | Campaign status and workspace suppression are separate controls. | Verify Unsubscribed status and inspect the Blocklist tab for cross-campaign blocking. Check any other sending system too. |
| A Google Sheets blocklist entry did not stop an existing campaign | Instantly says this source is checked on import, not during ongoing campaigns. | Use the workspace Blocklist tab for existing leads. |
Do not “fix” an opt-out test by manually changing the controlled lead back to Lead and resending through a live campaign. If a reset is needed, isolate the test and record what was reset. For a real recipient, preserve the opt-out.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the unsubscribe link fail in Instantly Preview?
Instantly explicitly says the Preview test email's link does not function. Add an address you control as a real campaign lead, send the actual step, click its link and confirm the lead becomes Unsubscribed.
Is the List-Unsubscribe header the same as the body link?
No. Instantly configures the visible link in the selected Sequence email step and the header in Campaign Options. A mail client may expose the header as its own unsubscribe action. Verify the two separately.
Does the header checkbox alone meet Gmail's one-click rule?
The checkbox's name is not enough evidence. For covered messages, Google's guidelines call for List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers, along with a visible body link. Inspect the actual message headers and confirm any missing behavior with the sending provider.
Will an Unsubscribed lead be blocked from every future Instantly campaign?
Do not assume a single campaign status proves workspace-wide suppression. Check Instantly's Unsubscribed leads automatic blocklist setting and the workspace Blocklist tab, which Instantly says applies to active campaigns and later imports. Keep opt-outs synchronized with any other sending system you operate.
